- Desired results are achieved without significant costs.
Application:
1. Prepare and clean the damaged area.
Clean the damaged area using a household vacuum cleaner. Ensure the area is dry before starting. Carefully trim frayed areas and excess threads with scissors or a knife, as well as charred edges. Remove all charred material for burn damage. Make the damage area edges smooth – you should end up with a hole in the material with straight edges.
2. Insert the fabric backing under the damaged area. Use a spatula to insert the fabric backing under the hole made in step 1. For repairing large holes more than 6 mm, cut the fabric backing slightly larger than the hole. Smooth the fabric backing with a spatula. Glue the backing on the inside with vinyl adhesive. Dry with a hairdryer.
3. Choose heat-resistant paper with a texture that most closely matches the damaged surface texture. On the back of the chosen heat-resistant paper, outline the damaged area. This will help correctly position the heat transfer tool in step 8.
4. Fill in the deep damage. For deep damages, such as on a vinyl dashboard, use clear vinyl adhesive with filler and a spatula to level the damaged area to the original surface. The adhesive will slightly shrink when drying, leaving a void that will be subsequently filled with color repair compound.
5. Using the shade selection chart or by trial and error, determine the set of repair compounds that will create the needed shade when mixed. Mix this set in the required amount in the mixing container to obtain the desired shade. Check the shade match by rubbing a small amount of the mixture on an undamaged surface, then remove it with a cloth.
6. Apply the repair mixture. Once the vinyl adhesive has dried, use a spatula to evenly and gently apply the mixture to the damaged area. Wipe off any excess around the hole or damage. Do not overlap the damaged area.
7. Place the textured heat-resistant paper on the repair zone. Stick it over the repair mixture, ensuring the outlined contour is directly over the damaged area. Do not move it. If repairing on a vertical surface, secure the paper with tape at the top.
8. Heat treatment. This is a very important step in the repair process. Turn on the iron and let it heat up to a high temperature for at least four minutes. Place the tip of the heat transfer tool directly on the iron and let it heat for a few minutes. Then press the tool to the working contour on the heat-resistant paper and with circular motions, gently press down over the repair area for 20-30 seconds. Remove the heat-resistant paper from the repaired area.
